American English Form of the English language spoken in the United States.American English (English American English [əˈmɛɹɪkən ˈɪŋɡlɪʃ], AE or AmE for short) is the standard variety of English spoken in the United States of America.The American English has been influenced throughout its history by the various English dialects of its immigrants from England, Scotland and Ireland, but also by language contact with the French, Spanish and Native Americans. The most striking feature of American English is rhoticity, i.e. the r sound is also used pronounced after vowels, for example at the end of a word. Special features can also be found at the word level, e.g. sidewalk (AE) vs. pavement (BE). Although American English is relatively homogeneous compared to British English, there are also regional differences, the largest being between the Northeast and South on one side and the central and western United States on the other. Important social varieties of American English are African American Vernacular English and Hispanic American English. Standard American English is also known as General American and is spoken primarily in the western United States. There has been extensive research on American English since the end of the 19th century, including several dictionaries of American English and a linguistic atlas of American English.
