We were told — repeatedly — that we were going to run out of oil by the year 2000. It was on the TV. It was in the newspapers. It was printed in every school textbook and every encyclopedia. It was taught as scientific fact. The experts all agreed. There was a 100% consensus.
The story was simple: we’re using up oil too fast and we won’t have enough. The world is going to freeze in a new ice age. We’ll be cold and we’ll have no oil. The only way to avoid this terrible future is to find alternatives and to make oil very expensive — so expensive that every drop is treated as precious.
